Leadership Week is here!

This week is Leadership Week at Tauriko School and we will be celebrating all sorts of leaders in all sorts of ways.
Your challenge this week is to post a comment about someone at our school who shows leadership. Tell us their first name and say how they show leadership.
I'll start ...
Charlotte, in our class, shows leadership by being responsible for setting up Jump Jam on Friday for the junior classes. She is also a milk monitor who helps out in Room 4. Charlotte always remembers to do the jobs, she does them without being asked, and she always does them to a high standard. Charlotte volunteers to help and I know I can rely on her to do a great job.
Thanks for being a Room 6 leader Charlotte ... you rock!

Welcome Word Wizards!

As part of our on-going quest to unlock the mysteries of words and discover the magic of language we are learning about groups of words. This week we are looking at words that begin with the prefix under. A prefix is a word or group of letters that can be added to the front of a work to add a new meaning.

My word of the week is ... underground, which means under the ground.
This week's blog challenge is to find your own word that starts with under, write the word and then write it in a sentence to show its meaning.
This is definitely a challenge you should undertake.

Matariki Week

What an exciting week we have ahead of us at school ... celebrating Matariki, our hangi and activity day on Thursday.
As part of our learning we are going to share our questions and answers in a question chain.
I will start with a question about Matariki and the person who answers my question will pose the next question for someone else to answer.
Remember to read over what other people have said so we have new questions being asked.
You need to write your question and answer down before you publish on the blog because the world is watching and we want to show our best work.

Matariki Question Chain

What is another name for Matariki?

Six Sentence Superheroes

Room 6's target writers have been working on six sentence narratives based on their own superhero.
This was the criteria for their writing:

Here are some of the finished stories. Read the stories and then post a comment on the blog to give them feedback on the writing.
Remember to refer to the criteria in your feedback or comment on any other language features that you noticed.

Six Sentence Superhero by Taylor

Once upon a time there was a mysterious superhero called Night Wing, who could breathe under water.
Night Wing lived in a cave in the depths of the tropical ocean and to get there you needed to give a magic password.
He could glide off buildings and shapeshift other objects, including people.
One day his underwater cave was burgled by two super villains and they stole his freeze ray, his prized possession.
He was furious and heartbroken at the same time.
So he rang his friend Night Rider who came as quick as he could so they searched until they found them and then bashed them and got the freeze ray back.

Six Sentence Superhero by Minnie

Once upon a time there was a night-out superhero who flew around at night looking for children who couldn’t sleep so that she could sprinkle diamond spray over them and send them off to sleep.
She lived far, far away in a diamond castle where no one would find her.
Her name was Starry but you could not see her during the day because she only came out at night.
Her problem was that if she went out in the sunlight she would go blind.
She felt unincluded so she was a lonely superhero.
Starry invited people when she went out and then every Saturday night they had a party so she was never alone again.

Night Rider lived in an underwater cave in the Antarctic Ocean.
Night Rider was famous for fighting bad people and catching robbers.
He was sad because he was lonely in his underwater cave.
Night Rider was the saddest superhero in the world and the loneliest.
He thought and thought and then decided to use his super power to get whatever he wanted and he was never lonely again.

Let's celebrate Matariki!

Here are the seven stars of Matariki.

It is nearly Matariki - the Maori New Year and time to celebrate.
What do you know about Matariki that you can share with others?
Have you see the Matariki stars in the sky?

This week we will be revisiting the legend of Rangi and Paptuanuku and seeing how that ties in with Matariki.
Next week is our big Matariki celebration at school.

Music Around the World

As part of our cultures and festivals inquiry topic - Celebrate Good Times, we are looking at musical instruments from around the world.
Here is one that comes from Africa. How do you think it makes sounds?
What is it made of?
How could you make a similar instrument? What would you use to make it?

Head Students Blog

Head on over to the Hannah and Sophie's Head Students Blog. Click here.
They are running a competition at the moment based on leaders who inspire you. This fits perfectly with what we are looking at in class.  I don't know about you, but I can think of two leaders who inspire me - Hannah and Sophie!
Thanks girls for being the amazing leaders that you are.
